On the last night before he died Jesus ate supper with his friends. Taking bread and wine he blessed them and gave them to his disciples saying ‘Do this to remember me’. After supper, according to John’s gospel, Jesus washed their feet as an example of loving service. Having your feet washed with cool, lemon-scented water puts you in the place of the disciples.
